Explaining COVID-19 to your friends and family

We at Little Gate understand that right now is a very difficult time for everyone, and trying to adjust to an altered way of life seems very strange! We also know that this is especially tricky for adults and children with learning disabilities and/or autism, and that in the coming weeks being able to navigate their feelings and thoughts towards coronavirus is going to prove hard for both the individual and the people caring for them.

We have done some research into social stories explaining the current situation, in the hope that through having a visual aid, the person you care for may be able to process the change a little better! Here are some good ones we found:

If you are a carer who is worried about telling the person they care for about closures/self-isolation, the National Autistic Society has a helpline that may be able to offer you advice. Local charity Project Art Works also facilitate a peer support network (which will be going virtual) to provide the essential support you might need over the coming months.
